Parts of Limerick still at high-risk of flooding. Floodwaters are still rising in the Shannon Banks area on the outskirts of Limerick city.
Up to 50 people were forced to leave their homes last night as the area was put on high alert, and the water is said to be a couple of feet deep this morning.
The army, assisted by the Fire Services, Civil Defence and local authority staff have delivered thousand of sandbags to help in the effort to keep back the rising water levels, and the army’s maintaining a presence in the area this morning.
There are fears the situation could get even worse, with very high tides forecast for tomorrow night and Thursday night.
Reporter with the Limerick Independent David Raleigh is at the scene. “There’s a terrible smell down here because the sewage is mixing with water and I suppose residents are worried about health and safety” he said. “People are really distraught…it’s going to be the third day now when they wake up today that they’ve been dealing with this flooding”. “It hit…the back of these houses on Sunday night, but it really came in at around 1 or 2 (o’clock) yesterday afternoon when the River Shannon burst it’s banks” he added.
